Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing
A gig boat is a fixed-seat, six-oared wooden boat with a crew of six rowers and a cox. Originally, gigs were working boats taking pilots out to incoming vessels with the first to arrive getting the job. Today, gig boats are used recreationally with over 100 junior, men’s and women’s teams worldwide, predominantly in the southwest.
Clubs row in regattas throughout the year, from local events to the World Pilot Gig Championships in the Isles of Scilly. Hayle Gig Club hosts the Under 14s Championships every summer. The Cornish Pilot Gig Association manages and develops the sport.
Hayle Gig Club row from Hayle Harbour which provides a safe rowing environment in most weathers, allowing us to row all year round. In the summer months, we often train in Mounts Bay to experience training in different waters. We have two plastic training boats and two traditional wooden racing gigs, allowing multiple crews to row together.
Hayle Gig Club’s members are friendly and welcoming. Whether you have rowed before or are a complete novice, you can join us for a free taster session to try gig rowing for yourself.
